How to install stone veneer:
1. Prepare the Surface
- For concrete, brick, or block: Clean thoroughly so it’s free of dirt, dust, or loose particles. Slightly dampen before applying mortar.
For wood or drywall:
- Attach a water-resistant barrier (building paper or house wrap).
- Install galvanized metal lath with corrosion-resistant screws or nails.
- Apply a scratch coat of mortar, about ½ inch thick, then score horizontal grooves to help veneer adhere. Let cure 24–48 hours.
2. Plan Your Layout
- Lay out stones on the ground first to mix sizes, shapes, and colors for a natural look.
- Start with corner pieces (if applicable) so they wrap edges cleanly.
- Keep joint widths consistent (usually ½ inch or less).
4. Apply the Mortar
- Use a trowel to “butter” the back of each stone with about ½–¾ inch of mortar.
- Firmly press the stone into place with a slight wiggle to create suction and remove air pockets.
- Check with a level as you go.
5. Fill the Gaps (If Using Mortared Joints)
- After stones are set, use a grout bag to fill joints with mortar.
- Let the mortar set until it’s firm but not fully hardened, then use a jointing tool to smooth and compact it.
